Adidas has been making some of the most stylish and comfortable wrestling shoes on the planet for decades. Unlike other manufacturers, Adidas has always been rather ubiquitous internationally and is generally the go-to wrestling shoe brand for wrestlers all over the world. Some of the most accomplished collegiate and international wrestlers such as Jake Varner, David Taylor, and Jordan Oliver have become ambassadors of Adidas shoes and embodied what the brand is all about through their unique styles, and dominant performance on the mat.
Historically, they have always stayed very consistent with having a few style and design options that have had mass appeal to a wide audience. They have really mastered the art of combining simplicity with style, durability, and functionality… that is, until very recently. Never before has Adidas Wrestling so aggressively focused in on high-level design and technology. Their competitors have been kept on their toes because Adidas has been innovating like crazy and coming out with new top-selling shoes year after year.
Here are a couple truths you can be sure of in regards to Adidas wrestling shoes: They will be comfortable, and they will look good. Anyone who has worn a pair of Combat Speeds will tell you they are some of the lightest, fastest shoes around and they feel like socks. The Combat Speed 4 is a remake of the 80’s classic Adidas Combat Speed, brought back by popular demand (best decision ever, Adidas). When they did this, we could not even keep them on the shelves. Combat Speeds sell like hot cakes and probably will continue to for a long time. They are great because they come in youth sizes and really can be worn by wrestlers of any level.
After hitting a home run….err, should we say “getting a pin” with the Combat Speed 4, they made one of their biggest innovative steps in years with the Adizero Varner. With a split sole and a unique 100% mesh upper, this shoe makes it feel like you are wrestling on clouds. It truly was the first of its kind and sent shockwaves across the entire wrestling shoe world. They didn’t stop there. For years, Adidas seemed to be painfully lacking a mid to high quality, full-sole offering. One fateful day, they finally dropped one of the most revolutionary designs yet, with the Mat Wizard 3. Incredibly, they managed to create a full-sole, high-grip, very durable shoe while still keeping the sole flexible, compared to competitive models.
They have since released the Adidas Tech-Fall, which is essentially a blend of the Varner mesh upper, and the Mat Wizard outsole, along with a few extra upgrades, making it the most expensive wrestling shoe on the market. And it is absolutely worth every penny. A couple other new additions are the Flying Impact and the Pretero III. The Flying Impact also used the Mat Wizard outsole, but features a new, very high top, heavier duty upper for elite wrestlers who really want great support, grip, and durability. The Pretero actually picked up the outsole from the ever-popular Adizero London, combined with a new modern and stylish upper.
Finally, their most recent update has been in the youth and beginner segments. After many years, Adidas finally updated the HVC (Havoc) to the HVC 2 and HVC 2 Youth. Although it looks nearly the same, they’ve upgraded the materials to make it more durable and fit more comfortably. With all these new additions, Adidas has a rock-solid lineup from top to bottom. We are confident that you’ll be able to find some new kicks that fits your style, experience level, and price range.
A final note on Adidas wrestling shoes: ALL MODELS come in sizes 4 and up (unless we are out of stock), and a few models also come in youth sizes, even as low as K10. Also, Adidas tends to run more “true to size” than other brands, and generally are made to allow for both wide and narrow feet.
