ASICS wrestling is one of the longest standing and most prolific wrestling brands out there. Although other top brands give them tough competition, very few have had anywhere near the same impact on the sport of wrestling. ASICS provides a full range of gear to get you geared up from head to toe, including shoes, headgear, singlets, kneepads, warmups, training gear, and accessories. From the freshman wearing Matflexes to the senior rocking Omniflexes, ASICS has something for everyone.
Although the ASICS brand is most commonly associated with running and volleyball, they are also experts in wrestling shoes and apparel. They are constantly working to push the boundaries of technology in their gear to remain at the forefront of the industry. We all know their shoes are amazing, but they also recently started offering custom sublimated singlets, which were worn by all of the 2016 U.S. Olympians, including Gold Medalists Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis, and bronze medalist J’den Cox (P.S., you can get them for your team too).
ASICS has done big things for the sport of wrestling in many ways. In addition to creating some of the best gear, they’ve sponsored some of the world’s greatest athletes and they host some of the most precarious competitions, including the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, and the ASICS Las Vegas Open Wrestling Championships for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. The list of legends that ASICS has sponsored is about a mile long, but we’ll do our best here to give you some of the highlights.
ASICS has arguably put more US Olympic Gold Medalists in their shoes than any other wrestling gear brand. One of the first elite wrestlers to adopt ASICS as their brand of choice is none other than the legendary Dan Gable himself. Gable was one of the greatest wrestlers to step on the mat, and is arguably the greatest coach of all time, with 15 NCAA titles for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He single-handedly made the Onitsuka Tigers one of the most popular wrestling shoe models in history. Sadly, ASICS no longer makes that shoe, but they do still continue to produce the Dan Gable Ultimate line of wrestling shoes, which is pretty amazing as well. Dave Schultz is another legend who chose ASICS wrestling shoes to help take him to the top of the podium at the 1984 Olympics. ASICS re-released the throwback Dave Schultz Classic wrestling shoe for a brief period, shortly after the film “Foxcatcher” came out.
Among the more recent legends of the ASICS team are Cael Sanderson and Jordan Burroughs. After going undefeated in college for Iowa State and winning Olympic Gold in 2004, Sanderson has gone on to coach Penn State to 5 NCAA titles, and counting. ASICS is currently on version 7 of the Cael wrestling shoe line, which is consistently very popular with high school and college teams as they’re modestly priced and come in many of the common team colors.
Perhaps the most famous and accomplished wrestler of our time, Jordan Burroughs, is the star of ASICS’ roster. A 3x World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist (2012), Burroughs had been nearly unbeatable until his unfortunate loss at the 2016 Games in Rio. Still he has made an impact on the sport of wrestling like no other. There’s never been a time in history when the blast double was so popular. He’s arguably created a clone of himself in his teammate and training partner, James Green, who has a nearly identical work ethic and wrestling style. Just before the Rio Games in 2016, ASICS released a first-ever full signature clothing and training gear line for a wrestler, the JB Elite line. JB helped ASICS design some of the most fashionable shoes, singlets, training gear, and casual wear on the market.
World Champion Adeline Gray and Tervel Dlagnev are also ASICS team members who competed in the 2016 Olympics, but fell just short of Medaling. The rest of the ASICS current or recent competitors include: Tony Ramos, Ed Ruth, Logan Stieber, Clarissa Chun, Reece Humphrey, Brent Metcalf, and Spencer Mango.
