The Adidas AdiZero Varner 2: Jake Varner's Second Shoe

The Adidas AdiZero 2 wrestling shoe is quite possibly the best sequel in wrestling shoe history. We weren’t sure how Adidas was going to one-up the wildly popular and amazingly comfortable version 1 of the Varner, but they’ve worked their magic and completely blown us away with this new release. The Varner 2 has kept and improved upon the features everyone loved about the original, and reimagined the certain design aspects that were holding it back from true greatness. As the name implies, this is the signature shoe of Olympic Gold Medalist Jake Varner. As such, Adidas designed this shoe around his wrestling style, and used his input to create one of the best elite-level wrestling shoes ever.

Like version 1, the entire upper is made of a highly breathable, single-layer mesh that is engineered to be both incredibly comfortable and highly durable. The sock-like fit of this mesh layer gives the Varner 2 that lovely broken-in feeling right out of the box. They’ve made some slight changes, making it more tightly knit, to be stronger and more rip-resistant. It also comes with more reinforced stitching at the seams along the heel and between the outsole and upper. What looks like a snazzy design element is actually a thin vinyl and synthetic leather overlay that helps provide support and holds the shape of the mesh upper. While it is mostly a functional feature, we must admit, those lines give this shoe an extra “wow” factor that many elite wrestlers look for. One less noticeable, but important update, is the lace pocket at the top of the tongue. Now, you can finally tie up your laces and tuck them away neatly, without having to tape them or worry about them coming untied.

What has changed, you ask? Well, the most significant change that Adidas made to this shoe is the outsole. While many people really loved the previous outsole of the Varner, not everyone was a fan. It was similar to the Combat Speed sole, in that it was very minimal with just two small areas for grip, and had a slightly more pointed toe and raised heel. Great for some, but we heard a lot of feedback asking for more grip and a more rounded toe box. Adidas must have heard the same things, because they added a ton of grip, using yet another entirely new outsole. The outsole is kind of a hybrid, has all the flexibility of a classic split-sole, and it comes with a narrow strip of rubber down the center so you can maintain traction at all times. The heel is slightly rounded as well, to help you smoothly transition between stances and find grip in more positions. If you look at the way the molded rubber teeth align, you can tell this shoe is made for an aggressive wrestler who is always moving forward. The EVA midsole has a slight wedge shape to it, which will keep your weight a little more over your toes to help you take the action to your opponent!

The Adidas Varner 2 is a great shoe that has best of both worlds. It has great flexibility and awesome grip. The Varner also has a high upper sole which is great for ankle support. Unfortunately, no lace garage or velcro strap to cover laces so you will need to tape laces up.

These shoes are a great product with high ankle support to prevent you from rolling your ankles, with plenty of grip.

It didn’t really last me a long time the two front soles ripped. I was expected them to last me longer. I don’t recommend these I liked the shoes wasn’t durable.

these shoes are not very good. they offer no ankle support, the grip is awful. if you try to drive with them you're going to end up just slipping on the mat.

Phenomenal service. The shoe was a good fit. It was wide enough, unlike other brands. Soft and not too hard.

The upper is very stable and no movement. The grip is ok. It feels very odd and slippery. But, overall one of my favorite shoes.

I have a very narrow foot and this shoe was perfect for me. I have had for a week and they are all broke in and ready for competition. They fit to size unlike some of Adidas other shoes. the grip is great and I feel pretty flexible in the shoes. Since the shoe is narrow expect a snug fit and I recommend only getting them if you like your shoe tight fitting. Personally for me, I definitely recommend this shoe.

They slide on pretty smooth. When they are all laced up they fit very comfortable and snug. The grip on the mat seems nice. The red colorway looks very nice also.

I've had them for a month now and they feel great and took no time to break in. The grip and flexibility are a lot better then the adizero varner 1's. My only complaint is that within a week a piece of the rubber sole by the heel broke off but otherwise it seems durable and I think these will last a long time.

The shoe fits nice and the size is the exact same as Asics so say you wear a 10 in Asics i'd recommend a 10 in this shoe. the grip for me took about a day or two to start working but once it did the grip is insane and the shoe is very durable and feels lightweight. and just the look of the shoe is very slick.

Lightweight, comfortable fit, durable. Holds up against punishment on the mat. Lasts a good long while. Had mine for about 3 years and they still held up.

If the shoes he is currently wearing too tight and has grown out of them, the size 8 would be good.

My daughter has worn the Cael's for several years. Currently she is a size 7 in the Cael v7.0's. Would these shoes be considered comperable the Cael's and would the sIzes be similar?

    Joey P.'s picture

Adidas size differently than Asics shoes. So if shes a 7 in the Caels it would be best for her to go down to a 6.5 in Adidas. The Varner 2 have way more grip than the Cael V7. The only thing is the Cael has more flexibility than the Varner. Like all shoes, once you break the Varners in they are pretty flexible and durable.

If i'm a 10 in Nike inflicts what size should i get these in and are these better that hypersweep.

At that moment that is hard to determine. We have seen the sample's of the Varner 2's and they look like a heavy duty shoe, really durable and with tons of grip. We have not received an entire size run of the shoe to determine if they are running any different in size. Also, we can't say if one shoe is better than the other at this point in time.
