Although men’s wrestling nationwide still vastly outnumbers women’s wrestling as a whole, it is becoming increasingly obvious that female wrestling has become the fastest growing sport in the U.S. As of 2015, the number of female high school wrestlers has exploded to nearly 12,000 from just over 800 in 1994. 28+ colleges now sponsor varsity women’s wrestling programs, most of which have over 30 members by their third year. These numbers are growing almost exponentially year after year. Some of the biggest hot spots for female wrestling are Alaska, California, Hawaii, Tenessee, Texas, and Washington with California having the highest number of participants. In the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, returning world champion Helen Maroulis brough home the United States' first Olympic Gold Medal for women's wrestling be defeating a 13 time world champion, Saori Yoshida of Japan. This marks a huge moment in history and a huge step in the right direction for female wrestling in the U.S.
