At WrestlingMart, we are doing our best to make sure we have tons of great gear for the fastest growing (literally, what are you feeding them?) demographic of wrestlers: the kids. It’s true, there is nowhere near the same selection of gear for youths as there is for adults, but we’re working hard to close the gap. Fortunately, unlike most youth clothing, and especially shoes, you won’t have to replace your kids’ wrestling singlets every two weeks because they’re made to stretch.
Of all the wrestling gear that we carry, singlets are the hardest to mess up on when it comes to sizing. That said, if you haven’t sized a wrestling singlet before, it’s a little different than sizing a t-shirt or shorts. Rather than a waist, height, or age measurement, singlets are sized based on a person’s bodyweight. Since the Lycra material is made to stretch, the same size can fit many different body shapes, waist sizes, etc. As a rule of thumb, if your child is “between sizes” or exceptionally tall for their weight, go ahead and grab the next size up from what the chart says. It doesn’t hurt to have a singlet that’s a size or two too big, but your kid will be very uncomfortable with a singlet that’s too tight.
One question that many folks ask us is “ok, but where does youth end and adult begin?”. This is a critical piece of information you’ll want to know before hunting down your size. Although, yes, you may consider your teenager to be a “youth”, a 140 lb. “youth” would wear a medium singlet, not a youth medium singlet. In most cases, youth sizes cover wrestlers in the elementary and middle school age groups – roughly 12 and under. The sizes we carry are listed as YXS (5XS), YS (4XS), YM (3XS), and YL (2XS). Depending on the brand, sometimes that funny in-between size is either listed as YXL or XS. Sizes XS and up cover all the high school, collegiate and adult weight classes. Remember: If your child is close to 100 lbs. or more and/or is in high school, there should not be a letter ‘Y’ in front of his or her size. Note: At the youth level, the body changes that come with adolescence haven’t quite kicked in yet, so youth sizing is unisex.
All of the big wrestling brands like ASICS, Matman, Cliff Keen, Adidas, and WrestlingMart (yep, shameless plug right there) carry youth sizes of wrestling singlets. Most brands at least carry size YS (4XS) and up, but if you have an especially tiny child, check out Matman or WrestlingMart singlets. They both carry youth singlets all the way down to size YXS (5XS) – that fits a person weighing roughly 30-40 lbs. While we have a big selection of different styles and designs, most first time wrestlers, or parents of wrestling, are just looking for something basic and affordable. The ASICS Solid Modified, Modified Reversible, Matman 85, Matman Reversible, and Cliff Keen Relentless singlets are our most popular picks in that category. For something a little flashier, any of the WrestlingMart sublimated singlets should fit the bill.
